Today we celebrate the Miracle at Cana and the beginning of the Christ's public ministry. During the course of this typical Jewish wedding feast that goes on for days on end, His hosts run out of wine. This is a truly embarrassing predicament to be in, as it shows lack of forethought for the needs of the guests on the part of the newly married couple.
However, the Blessed Virgin intercedes on their behalf, asking her Son to help them. He seems to briefly admonish her, but he does as she asks. She tells the servants to listen to Him, and they do, filling large stone jugs with water that should normally be used to wash the feet of travelers and guests. The water, then became wine, the greatest wine that anyone had apparently tasted.
He honored His mother as the law of Moses demanded. He honored His Heavenly Father by beginning His public ministry. He aided the new married couple whom would have been ashamed. However, He did something else here. He signed His own death warrant.
By the time He is in the Garden at Gethsemane, we realize He has known how His time on Earth will draw to an end. He was obedient, even unto death, and started his march to earthly condemnation by honoring His mother's call for intercession.
Thus begins His call that echoes through the ages since. The call for conversion, the call for passion, the call for love, the call for repentance and the call for a relationship. He gave up His life, and it all started by turning life giving water into the more potent life giving wine, a precursor to the water of life and the life giving blood that He offers unto us.
