A Grim Anniversary

Today is a grim anniversary and sets an unfortunate record for the United States of America. It has now been one decade since we entered Afghanistan. Three thousand six hundred and fifty days over there, which is 326 more days the disastrous Soviet occupation that we supported the Mujahadeen during. The same Mujahadeen who became the Taliban and still fight us today, sometimes with American weapons.

One thousand eight hundred and two US military men and women have given their lives in the course of this mission. That doesn't even count the casualties of the ISAF international troops in that number, though the link will show you theirs as well. One-third of veterans say the war isn't worth it.

Afghanistan is a failed state. Its corrupt western installed government is knee deep in the drug trade and controls only a small area of the nation. No modern nation has ever successfully held a land where there is an active guerrilla force dedicated against it, and the last person to successfully hold Afghanistan and tame it was Alexander the Great. Perhaps, as the global economy nosedives, it's time to consider withdrawing and admitting our failure, rather than stubbornly spending billions a day to only increase a people's hatred of us.
