Several hours ago, Hosni Mubarak, the President of Egypt resigned his post after eighteen days of protests against his regime. Egypt continues to face an uncertain future, but the celebrations that are occurring in Tahrir Square and other places are an amazing sight to behold.
With the military assuming what is supposed to be a custodial role the question is now what will happen next in Egypt. It's a good question: will democratic reforms be instituted? Will the treaties with Israel be kept? Will the average Egyptian see any difference in their lives?
Tonight however, those questions are not what is first and foremost on the minds of people. Tonight a dictator has been toppled in a relatively bloodless demonstration that showed the will and the determination of the Egyptian people to be free. Never in my life did I think I would bare witness to the fall of an autocratic regime as my parents' generation did the Soviet Union, not to a force of mainly peaceful people who would call for change.
