In which I ramble

In my field we have a number of theories to explain why crime occurs.  I studied about fifteen of them for my Qualifiers, though it hit me last week that I did not know how many we actually had.  With that in mind, I went to the office next door and asked a theorist, who told me we have between sixty and ninety theories on crime causation and cessation.  No single theory, much to the dismay of the entire field, adequately explains criminality.  The better theories may explain a third of occurrences of certain types of crime, but there is no root cause that any of the theories themselves can find.

By extending ourselves to a vast spread of theories, we try to get any way we can to explain things.  In so doing, we ignore two things.  The first is that there is sin, because sin is not exactly a kosher argument outside of theology departments (pun intended).  The second and equally not discussed, is that true evil does exist in our world.

I'm not saying crime is caused by true evil, just that evil exists.  However, there are things I have watched and heard which sometimes give me pause to go, "How can a man do that by himself? Are we that depraved?"  And in the back of my head, a still, small voice, goes, "I hope so, because the alternative is worse."
