Sad News to Pass On

As the Father John Corapi issue continues to divide online Catholics, it seems there's some sad news to pass on. First brought to my attention by an overly gleeful blog post by Mark Shea.

It seems that the POW Network, a non-partisan group dedicated to our prisoners of war throughout the nation's history, has listed Father John Corapi under their "Phonies" page for his claims about being a Green Beret in Vietnam. For further proof, they've provided a link to a PDF format of his records that they requested under the Freedom of Information Act, which don't seem to be exactly chock full of redactions.

As someone who has been hoping the scandals around Father Corapi would die down, this is sad news for me. I continue to acknowledge I do not know his guilt or innocence in the matters of sexual misconduct of which he was accused, but it makes me sad to read the service records of this man and see that he lied about the nature of the service he performed for his country.
