I just finished reading a New York Times article on how Republicans will try to stop the filibuster because they feel it is being used against people of faith. I have news for them...there are tens of millions of registered Democrats who are Christians, and millions more who follow other spiritual paths. Yes, Democrats can be Christian, Marxists can be Christian, Greens can be Christian, Libertarians can be Christian, the list goes on and on.
No party has a monopoly on Faith, nor should one. That leads to the Islamic Republic of Iran. It leads to the Theocracy of the Dominionist Republican America. The Dominionist cancer that has grown to consume the Republican Party has betrayed the Reagan Revolution of the 1980s...it aims now to bring the judiciary under the heel of religion.
Not just any religion, but a religion of those who would be called in Christ's time "Pharisees". Dominionists who claim the name "Christian", are legalistic, they are Bible thumping while deliberately twisting scriptures to their own goals, they pick and choose which scriptures of the Old Testament to follow and which to not; they loudly and publicly pray as they are admonished by God's Word not to, and they make sure on the rare occassions they donate large sums of money that everyone is able to see them do it.
They have taken over television channels like one that won't be named. During Election season almost all programming was centered on getting evangelicals to vote for Bush ('cos Catholics aren't Christians to Dominionists), to donate money to both that station and the Republican Party, and to get people to buy their 'faith based' products.
As the judiciary comes under siege by two Dominionist controlled branches of the government, I must say that I fear what occurs if they conquer the Courts. I fear reversals of decisions such as Roe V Wade. For the record I'm Pro-Life. I don't believe in abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the mother's life. That last one, is why Roe V Wade, cannot be repealed. If it is this nation goes back to the days of coat hanger abortions, to the days of backroom chop shops, back to the days when women died or were scarred for life because they had their abortion anyhow, but it was someone untrained who did it.
I love America. I love every state, every forest, every street, and suburban sprawl. I love even the ghettos, and the apartments, the mansions and the shacks with dirt flooring. Why? Because I was raised to, just as I was raised with Christian beliefs. But that doesn't make me a Patriot, nor does it make me Christian. It is my choice to embrace both those things as I have done.
America's ideals are corrupted by human nature, just as the ideals of Christianity are corrupted by human nature. A wise man once said "Satan's greatest trick is to make us think he doesn't exist at all". I disagree, Satan's greatest trick is to make us think we're doing the Lord's Work.
