I just finished reading a really biased list from TIME magazine regarding the space race. It did, however, remind me why I'm in love with the stars (from a secular POV). That we can see them, that humanity has been able through hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice to stride among them, even if only a bit...it's a beautiful thing.
So much technology we have taken for granted for so long is the product of the space race. The computer I'm typing this from? Glad we had to miniaturize computers for probes and spacecraft. Any number of medicines? Yep. Tang? Sure. Cell phones? Yep. Just about anything modern can be traced at some point to mankind's fascination with the stars and the goal of reaching them.
