Faith and Reason

A parable I like about the confluence of faith and reason. The Roman Catholic church teaches that both are needed in order to be a balanced person of faith. You can't see a bug fly by and assume it is a sign, when science can tell you that it's the middle of summer and that bug just hatched. Likewise, when science can't tell you why a statue is crying blood, there's a good time for faith!

Anyhow, the parable...two men were climbing a mountain. One was a scientist and the other was a theologian. The scientist reached the peak and extolled the wonders of the world and the forces that had shaped it over millions of years. The theologian reached the top and gave a small praise of thanksgiving to God for the wonder of His creation; that he would take the time as an artist to craft such things over untold ages. The two looked at one another with a sudden understanding; neither was quite as different as many would have led them to believe.

Faith and Reason. They are not mongoose and snake, love and hate, but rather twin pillars to hold up the way that we are called to look at this beautiful life.
